According to local legend, Shiva once travelled with a crore gods and goddesses. They stopped at Unakoti for the night and Shiva asked everyone to wake up before sunrise to continue their journey. However, when morning arrived, Shiva was said to be the only one who had awakened. The others were believed to have turned into stone.
This story is part of the local tradition and mythology surrounding Unakoti rather than established historical fact.

Its massive rock-cut sculptures, unique artistic style, connection with ancient Shaivite worship, and remarkable natural setting are among the reasons for its heritage significance. However, being on the Tentative List does not mean that Unakoti is currently a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
